BEST WATERPROOF JACKETS: MEN’S AND WOMEN’S BUYING GUIDE FOR 2024
If you embrace the outdoors, especially in Britain’s wet and windy weather, only the best waterproof jacket will do.
But being Musto, it’s just not enough to stay dry. We strive for reliable protection and high-performing resilience in even the most torrential downpours. That means you can be active with no restrictions, and without worrying about getting too hot, cold or sweaty. The good news is, we’ve got a wide range of the most reliable weather-proof jackets around.
So, what should you look for when buying a waterproof jacket that won’t let you down?
Our fabric technology experts have put together a Best Waterproof Jackets Buying Guide for Men and Women in 2024. From the most protective waterproof technology to what features you need to look for, we’ve got everything you need to know right here.
First, let’s start with the fundamentals…
What does waterproof mean?
Waterproof fabrics are built to resist water penetration. Historically, this was done by applying heavy coats of oils and waxes that repel water. However, modern waterproof fabrics now use a thin waterproof membrane instead. This is often engineered with small holes to allow some moisture, like sweat, to pass through, whilst being too small for water to penetrate. It’s this that results in a much more comfortable garment — whatever the weather.
Along with the membrane, Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatments are often applied to the fabric’s outer face to help maintain its waterproofness and effectiveness against the elements. However, for a jacket to be 100% waterproof, all seams must be taped as well. Taped seams are special heat-sealed seams that prevent water from coming through the stitching.
So for a garment to have a Musto waterproof guarantee, it must contain all three elements:
- A waterproof membrane
- A water-repellent coating
- Fully taped seams
But this is just the start. There are also other high-performing features to look for in a waterproof jacket that will keep you comfortable and dry when you’re out in foul weather.
What features should you look for in a waterproof jacket?
Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant Jackets
There’s a fundamental difference between waterproofing and water resistance. And when you’re far away from home and the heavens decide to open, this distinction just can’t be overlooked.
Water-resistant garments offer some degree of protection from the elements but can only stand up to so much rain. This could be because of the construction of the fabric, or because a light water-repellent coating has been applied to the fabric. On the flip side, you’re much better protected with waterproofing — whatever the weather decides to throw at you.
This is because a reliable waterproof jacket acts as a shield between the rain and your skin, completely preventing any water from penetrating. Materials like nylon and polyester naturally withstand more water than cotton and when they’re treated with special coatings and seals they create a powerful barrier against water penetration.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the key differences between the two types of fabrics:
Waterproof
- Suitable for heavier rainfall
- High water protection
- Taped seams
- DWR treated
- Features waterproof membrane
Water resistant
- Suitable for light showers
- Low water protection
- No taped seams
- DWR treated
- No waterproof membrane
But beyond this distinction, there’s some science to staying dry. At Musto, we call it BR1 and BR2 fabric technology.
Waterproof fabric technology
BR1 and BR2
BR1 and BR2 are Musto waterproof ratings for fabric and offer various levels of protection.
BR1 delivers extra protection in persistent downpours. It acts as a reliable outer or mid layer to shield you against unpredictable weather, whilst still offering excellent breathability. BR2 garments go a step further and are constructed to keep you dry and comfortable during prolonged torrential rain. However, both BR1 and BR2 jackets are:
- 100% waterproof in even persistent downpours
- Fully taped seams to prevent water penetration through stitch holes
- Lightweight and windproof

GORE-TEX
GORE-TEX is a membrane technology that’s well-known for its waterproof and breathable properties. This fabric consists of a thin membrane with microscopic pores that are smaller than water droplets — but larger than water vapour molecules. Consequently, this allows moisture to escape whilst still keeping water out. For that reason, a GORE-TEX shell is often used in high-performance outdoor clothing and footwear.
Polyester and Nylon blend
Fabrics made from blends of Polyester and Nylon fibre are a great choice for waterproof clothing because they can be treated. Adding waterproof coatings or laminates enhances the protective quality of these fabrics, making them a great choice for outdoor clothing — and especially waterproof jackets.
But there’s one treatment in particular that we believe is the most effective around…
Durable Water Repellent (DWR)
Durable Water Repellent (DWR) technology is a polymer coating added to outerwear to provide water-resistant protection. The technology repels water, causing it to bead on a garment’s surface. This makes it roll off the surface rather than soak into the fabric.
Not only does DWR repel liquid, but it does so in a way that lets fabrics breathe. Water droplets run straight off the surface, whilst vapour escapes from inside. This neutralises trapped moisture and avoids the uncomfortable and movement-restricting feeling of clothing becoming stuck to the skin.
Waterproof ratings
Hydrostatic Waterhead
To guarantee the highest level of waterproof protection, we test our fabrics using a hydrostatic waterhead. This is measured by pulling fabric tightly over a tube. The tube is then filled with water and the amount of water that leaks through the fabric after 24 hours is measured. The height of the water column, in millimetres, is the hydrostatic waterhead measurement.
We’ve found that even after the fabric has been washed five times, BR1 has a minimum hydrostatic waterhead of 5,000mm — 10,000mm. This is a significantly higher waterproof rating than the industry minimum of 1,500mm. Reassuringly, BR1 fabric allows 5,000g of moisture to pass through it, giving it a breathability rating of 5,000g/24hrs.
After five washes, BR2 has a minimum hydrostatic waterhead of 10,000mm — 15,000mm. This is a significantly higher waterproof rating than the industry minimum of 1,500mm. BR2 fabrics also allow 7,000g of moisture to pass through and have an overall breathability rating of 7,000g/24hrs.
MVT (Moisture Vapour Transfer)
MVT measures the breathability of a jacket. Again, it’s calculated by how much moisture can penetrate the fabric in 24 hours. This is often displayed as either 10,000 gr/m²/24hrs or 10,000gr. The good thing is that a waterproof membrane like GORE-TEX is already incredibly breathable, allowing sweat and vapour to be easily released.
Types of waterproof fabric layers
Waterproof fabrics are often constructed in two or three waterproof layers and can be laminated or coated together. They often consist of an outer layer, a membrane, and a lining.
- Outer layer — often referred to as the ‘face fabric’, this stylish layer acts as the first defence against the elements. It’s also usually treated with a DWR coating to protect against initial water exposure, preventing saturation.
- Membrane — typically constructed from Teflon (ePTFE), the small holes stop water getting in but allow vapour to escape. As these membranes often become less effective when contaminated by oil or sweat, they’re now coated in a Polyurethane (PU) membrane.
- Inner Layer — whether bonded to the 2-layer laminate or hanging, the inner layer protects the membrane from heavy wear, dirt and sweat. Crucially, it helps to aid breathability and enhance durability.
Waterproof fabric layer construction
Waterproof fabrics are typically classed into layers, e.g. 2-layer, 2.5-layer or 3-layer (often abbreviated to L). So look out for these distinctions when choosing the right waterproof jacket for you:
- 2-Layer — this is where a fully waterproof outer shell is bonded to a waterproof and breathable membrane. This is usually with a hanging inner lining which prevents the waterproof layer from deteriorating; this protective outer fabric acts as a 2-way barrier to both movement and sweat. It’s also the lightest form of construction, where low weight or packability is crucial.
- 2.5 layer — this is similar to a 2-layer but has an additional lining, coating or print applied to the inside of the product. Acting as a barrier, this protects the breathability of the garment by preventing dirt or sweat from damaging the inner material.
- 3-layer — suitable for all weather conditions, three-layer jackets offer the best defence against the harshest climates. That’s because this constriction has been engineered with an external DWR-treated waterproof layer, an internal waterproof and breathable membrane and an additional protective lining. These 3 layers are bonded together to make a technically efficient single fabric, providing comfort, durability and waterproof protection.
Additional features that keep water out
Breathability
An essential feature for any waterproof jacket, breathability ensures that sweat and water vapour escape your coat. This stops you from feeling clammy and cold so that you’re always comfortable inside.
Drawstring and peaked hood
Detachable and adjustable hoods — especially those with a stiffened peak — are perfect for keeping run-off water away from your face.
Adjustable hem and cuffs with fasteners
A scooped-back, adjustable hem adds extra coverage and helps to keep the weather out. Similarly, hook and loop adjustable cuffs stop rain and spray from penetrating your sleeves.
Internal pockets
Internal pockets keep your essentials safe and dry, Many also include an exit point for headphones allowing you to safely talk or listen to music whilst you’re out in the rain.
Storm guard over zip or waterproof zip
These features are designed to shield the zip and offer added defence against water penetration and rust

Waterproof jacket FAQs
How are waterproof jackets made?
You’ll find that waterproof jackets are usually constructed with either 2, 2.5 or 3-layers for protection. A single layer with a waterproof membrane will keep your clothes dry during short downpours, whilst a 2.5 layer has an additional lining, coating or print applied to the inside of the jacket for extra protection and added breathability. Finally, three-layer jackets offer the ultimate level of protection. That’s because an external DWR-treated waterproof fabric layer, an internal waterproof and breathable membrane layer and an additional protective lining are all bonded together to shield you from even the harshest conditions.
How does waterproof technology work?
Waterproof technology prevents water from entering a surface using a blend of materials, seals and coatings — all specially designed to repel water or create barriers of protection. This can include using waterproof materials, sealed seams and applying hydrophobic coatings. These methods ensure that water cannot penetrate and damage items like raincoats. However, the best waterproof jackets are built using technology that keeps you dry and releases water vapour at the same time. Essentially, good waterproof tech ensures you’re protected from the elements but not drenched in sweat. This is measured in the number of grams of water vapour that can pass through a square metre (gm2) of material in 24 hours.
Is GORE-TEX the best waterproof material?
GORE-TEX fabric is a great option because it provides excellent protection against rain, wind and freezing temperatures like snow. For example, GORE-TEX jackets have a microporous waterproof membrane that prevents water from penetrating the shell, whilst still allowing vapour to escape from inside.
What waterproof rating should I look for in a jacket?
The level of waterproofing in a jacket is often measured in millimetres (mm) of water pressure. Look for jackets with a rating of at least 5,000mm for light rain and 10,000mm or higher for heavy rain or snow.
What does a breathable jacket mean?
Breathability is essential to prevent discomfort during high-exertion activities. That’s because it helps quickly move moisture such as sweat through the fabric, preventing you from becoming cold and clammy. So look for jackets with breathable membranes like GORE-TEX, which allow moisture to escape while keeping water out.
What type of seams should I look for in a waterproof jacket?
Taped seams are essential for waterproofing. Jackets with fully taped seams ensure no water can seep in through stitching holes, so look out for jackets with these.
What is an adjustable cuff or hem?
Adjustable cuffs and hems are designed to seal out water and wind, whilst providing a more customisable fit for various body types. They also allow for more freedom of movement when you’re active — in or out of the rain.
How do I clean a waterproof jacket?
You can clean your waterproof jacket like you would most other garments. However, to ensure longevity and top performance, be sure to only wash your jacket when necessary.
Before washing, remove any detachable accessories, close all fasteners and add to a wash with similar colours using non-bio detergents.
Can I wash a waterproof jacket in a washing machine?
Most waterproof jackets can be washed in a machine these days. However, it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully to maintain the waterproofing and longevity of the jacket.
We’d recommend using a gentle cycle and non-bio detergent. You should avoid using biological detergents in all circumstances. That’s because biological detergents contain enzymes that can damage the performance and effectiveness of your product. For example, washing a waterproof jacket with biological detergent may affect the breathability and waterproofness of its fabric.
Also, avoid using fabric softener as this can also affect the breathability and moisture management of your jacket — not to mention damaging the fibres and colour fastness. So be sure to check the agents present in your current detergent as many contain fabric softener.
Finally, avoid using bleaching agents and check your current detergent doesn’t contain any before washing.
Do I need to re-treat my waterproof jacket?
At Musto, we treat all of our waterproof jackets with a durable water repellent (DWR). This polymer prevents the garment’s outer layer from being saturated with water. Wear and tear, salt, dirt or repeated washing can wear off the DWR treatment. Your garment may even appear to be leaking because the waterlogged outer is reducing the jacket’s breathability creating condensation on the inside. When this happens or to prevent this from happening, you will need to re-treat your product.
We advise only treating your garment when the DWR performance begins to lower and it doesn’t have to be after every single wash. You can test the DWR by sprinkling water on the jacket. If the water beads up and rolls off, the DWR does not need renewing. Reproofing will also prevent you from getting the uncomfortable “wet-out” feeling that can put an end to your day out.
We recommend Granger’s Performance Repel or Clothing Wash and Repel to renew the DWR. Please follow their instructions on how to re-proof the product. Alternatively, you could tumble dry your jacket for 20 minutes (on low heat) to reactivate the DWR treatment. But check the jacket’s label first to ensure it’s suitable for tumble drying). You can also place a towel over your garment and iron it (without steam) using low heat. But, again, please check the garment care label first.
What is a packable jacket and how do I tell if it’s packable?
Packable jackets are lightweight and specifically designed to be compressed into a small size. Packability is important for hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts looking to carry the jacket in a backpack. Usually made from light and compressible materials like nylon, polyester or PrimaLoft® insulation, look for jackets that can be folded into a small size without losing their waterproof properties.
How durable is the material of a waterproof jacket?
The durability of the jacket’s fabric affects its lifespan and can depend on several factors, e.g. the type of material used, how it’s constructed and how well you look after it. With this in mind, it’s important to first look out for jackets made from robust materials like nylon or polyester. Also, check for reinforced areas in high-wear areas like the shoulders and elbows, DWR coatings and fully taped seam seals.
How do I know if my jacket is insulated?
Some waterproof jackets come with insulation for added warmth in cold conditions, while others are designed to be worn over base layers in different climates. So check the product description or label and be sure to choose based on your intended use and climate.
What features should I look for in a hood?
An “excellent hood” for your waterproof jacket is entirely dependent on two things:
what you’re looking to do in the rain and how adverse the conditions are likely to be. However, here are some key factors to consider when weighing up your options:
- Adjustability — allowing you to customise the fit via drawcords or hook and loop.
- Coverage — protecting your head and face, whilst still offering good peripheral vision.
- Stiffened brims — designed to stop the hood from collapsing onto your face.
- Helmet-compatible hood — this is a must for sailing and other types of watersports.
- Adjustable hood volume — cinch down for a snug fit or loosen for more ventilation.
- Stowable or detachable — good for if you’re out in changeable weather conditions.
- Waterproofness — treated and seam-sealed to prevent water from penetrating.
- Comfort — look for soft linings to enhance comfort during prolonged wear.
- Compatibility with collar — ensuring a clean and streamlined look when not in use.
- Durability — should take frequent use and adverse weather without deteriorating.
How should a waterproof jacket fit?
Personal preference will always play a part in how a waterproof jacket should fit. For example, some people prefer a more relaxed fit that allows them to layer up outside, whilst others opt for a more streamlined, tailored or sleeker look. However, these are some things to bear in mind when thinking about the right fit for you:
- Range of motion — check you can move your arms, shoulders, and torso freely.
- Sleeve length — long enough to cover your wrists when your arms are extended fully.
- Hem length — covering your lower back to provide adequate protection against rain.
- Collar fit — providing adequate coverage and protection without chafing or rubbing.
- Adjustability — look for drawcord hems, adjustable cuffs and customisable hoods.
- Layering — room for base layers, mid-layers or a lightweight insulated jacket.
